10th Annual Legislative Conference      07/14/2009   21:16:33

It was Wednesday April 22, 2009 at the Lincoln Land Community College Capitol City Training Center where the 10th Annual CIC-SHRM Legislative conference was held.   The event was attended by 35 H.R. Professionals and other interested in what is happening in employment law and other trends. The day’s five presenters touched on a number of subjects from the old stand-by of FMLA to Lay Offs and Talent Management. The event was sponsored by Identi-Check and LLCC.
The day’s first speaker was Todd Donaldson with the Memorial Assistance Program. Todd spoke about the perils of layoffs and how to deal with the aftermath. Todd’s presentation identified potential problems while offering possible solutions.
The next speaker is one most H.R. folks in town know and have probably heard present before. Our old friend Roland Cross from Brown Hay and Stevens provided the group with a
case law update. Mr. Cross hit the whole alphabet soup of employment law, including ADA, GINA, BIPA, EFCA, EXIDA,  ARRA,  ADEA, EEOC and ERISA.
Next up was a returning speaker Leonard Sachs with Howard and Howard Attorneys, PLLC.  Lenny the lawyer as he introduced himself last year spoke largely about the Family Medical Leave Act. Lenny provided a handout  to the attendees that was offered up as “gold”.  You will have to speak to someone who attended to find out why it’s gold.
Lunch from Nelson’s catering was great! Thanks for putting that together Vicki Fowler, our chapter V.P.
After lunch we heard from another return speaker Martha Ramirez, PHR the Western Regional Director for SHRM. Martha presented on Best Practices in Talent Management.   Contact Webmaster Dave Ryan  for more details on this.
Wrapping up the day was Todd Lowery with the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Todd discussed the Work Opportunity Tax Credit and how employer can utilize the services that the department offers.
While the event drew a smaller crowd than in years gone by, the reviews of the event were quite favorable, so now doubt the event will be back in April of 2010.
