CIC-SHRM Post:
Immigration Compliance Training coming to St. Louis on April 23, 2010 04/06/2010 20:41:15In the past few months, unsuspecting employers throughout the Midwest have been targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for immigration compliance inspections, often facing significant fines, forfeiture, and even jail time as a result. Since April of 2009, when ICE announced that it was shifting its focus from deportation of unauthorized workers to criminal prosecution of employers, ICE has quadrupled its worksite enforcement efforts, using sophisticated investigative techniques to uncover noncompliance.
"Many employers are caught by surprise when faced with an inspection notice or a call from government. They think ICE is there to help them become compliant, when the real goal is criminal prosecution," says Mira Mdivani, an expert Immigration Lawyer twice named by Missouri Lawyers Weekly as the lawyer to call if immigration shows up. "Employers believe that they are immune from enforcement because of their size or nature of business, or because don't intentionally engage in fraud. In fact," Mdivani shares, "well-intentioned employers can face stiff penalties, including jail time, for I-9 errors."
I-9Seminars.com is offering a full-day Immigration Compliance Specialist training program on April 23, 2010, in St. Louis. The seminar will provide attendees with information on ICE's current enforcement practices, along with all the tools they need to implement an effective immigration compliance program in their workplace, including a ready-to-use compliance plan, policy, and procedures.
