CIC-SHRM Post:

Chapter Members Doing Good Work!      05/29/2010   13:54:55

Most of our chapter members are folks who attend our events regularly, which give them cause to, at least, know who the other chapter members are. Some of them we know to hear their name, others we see their face and recognize a friendly smile that you have seen at meetings, job fairs or other events. But I think there are only a handful of chapter members who really know a lot about a lot of the members.  The webmaster is one of those folks.  Some of what I know about members is good, some not so good.

Today I wanted to just touch on one of the good things. Many of us who work in Human Resources are called upon to perform civic/volunteer activities from time to time. We do so without complaining or making a big deal of it. Further, we seldom tell our family, friends or acquaintances about the good things that we do,   it would seem like you were being a bit of a braggart if you pronounced to your co-workers I helped four people today in addition to perform three other random acts of kindness. (Such as one thing I have grown to like doing, if you see one person in the car behind you at a drive through, buy their lunch; it probably only five or six dollars.)
So on this Saturday morning I was looking at the State Journal Register, seeing what was up for the holiday weekend. As I perused the paper I saw an ad for a Health Care Job Fair. This caught my eye, as those like me who work in a little grittier sector of the economy would not be included in such an illustrious event. As I read through the ad, I see it is at the convention center, and their doing speed interviewing. Interesting! They are also hosting an event on Dressing for Success. Again, another nice topic, and then I read Interview and Resume tips – Presented by Inez Harris. How wonderful.
Inez Harris is a board member of our local chapter. Inez’s title is Director of College Relations but she does a lot more than that for the chapter and all of its members. And now I see that Inez is helping folks trying to land a job.   It is the actions of people like Inez Harris that make me proud or our local chapter and the National organization (SHRM). See in the scheme of things this isn’t a really big deal, and Inez is not going to brag that she is doing this, but it is a damn fine thing.
As the chapter webmaster, let me say I am proud to associate with people like Inez Harris, who do great things while flying under the radar. Good Job Inez, keep doing good things – at least one person has noticed!
